" What Do I Do With My Hands? " And Other Ceremony FAQs

It is the most common question I get asked! Here is how to look natural and relaxed up there.

"Wait... what do I do with my hands?!"

You’ve picked the perfect outfit, the music is queued up, and you’re standing at the front. Suddenly, a terrifying thought enters your brain: “Wait… what do I do with my hands?!”

I promise you, 90% of couples ask me this during our rehearsal. Standing in front of your favorite people can feel a bit unnatural at first. Here is my foolproof guide to not looking like a stiff board at the altar.

Just remember.

  • Hold Hands! It sounds obvious, but holding your partner’s hands is the easiest solution. It grounds you, gives your hands a job, and looks fantastic in photos.

  • The Bouquet Hold: If you are holding flowers, drop them down to your belly button. People tend to hold bouquets like a shield right under their chins when they get nervous! Drop the shoulders, lower the flowers.

  • The Pocket Rule: For the suit-wearers, one hand in the pocket is totally fine—it looks relaxed and suave. Just avoid jingling your car keys while I’m speaking!

  • Embrace the Awkwardness: If you need a moment to shake out the nerves or wipe a tear, do it. Your wedding isn’t a Broadway performance; it’s real life.

If you are feeling the butterflies, just look at your partner, take a breath, and remember I am standing right there to guide you through the whole thing.

You don’t have to figure all this out on your own. Let’s grab a cuppa and talk about your vision for the day. I’ll bring the legal knowledge; you bring the ideas.
